SAR Students “Monkey Around” at Kittay House!

A lively debate about equal opportunity, discrimination and even the role that government plays triggered passionate responses recently from a group spanning nine decades!! On Monday, May 18th, 9th graders from Riverdale’s SAR Academy entered into an intense literary analysis about a piece from Kurt Vonnegut’s collection of short stories, Welcome to the Monkey House, with a dynamic group of tenants from Kittay House.

The Kittay house tenants in their 70’, 80’s and 90’s engaged the precocious group of students in a passionate intergenerational discussion about social equality, the basis of the Harrison Bergeron selection.

While the SAR Academy students have participated in other standalone intergenerational events at Kittay House, including a mock debate on issues from the recent Presidential election, the discourse stirred such intellectual excitement that this may well become an ongoing activity.

SAR principal Rabbi Tully Harcsztark boasted, while beaming with pride while watching his ninth graders interact with the opinionated seniors, “The kids really held their own with an extremely bright and assertive group of folks at Kittay.”
