Unlocking the Hearts and Minds of Elders through Poetry
An avenue of expression and even catharsis is at the heart of a poetry workshop series that Kittay House tenants are participating in during the month of May, thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Renowned writer and poet, Steven Sher, will be leading the workshops with volunteers from Poets House, a 50,000-volume poetry library and literary center.
The act of writing poetry unlocks hearts and frees minds of long-held regrets. Kittay House tenant Marianne Ultman is hoping to reflect on her experiences in life and share what she values now as an elder.
The program offers five workshops that include a poetry jam, memory circle and lecture and discussion group throughout the month and early June.
On June 17th, Kittay House tenants will celebrate their work with a printed anthology. Please call Naomi Chiel for more information about attending this event at 718-410-1416.
WCBS Radio-880 AM aired an interview with Steven Sher on Wednesday, May 6th, discussing the Kittay workshop. Sher, who has written twelve books, many of them dealing with Jewish themes, shared how he hopes that the Kittay elders will explore their creative sides at the workshops.
"I am excited about what should be a lively and rewarding workshop. I hope to inspire and guide those who participate, and intend it to be a supportive and valued workshop. The participants at a recent workshop I led for Poets House decided to keep meeting weekly after our time together ended. May it happen at Kittay, too."
