Dr. Singer-Magdoff
Before Dr. Ruth, there was Dr Laura Singer-Magdoff!!

Just to ensure a good seat during the packed weekly "Tea & Talk" program, led by renowned psychoanalytic psychotherapist and Kittay tenant, Dr. Laura Singer-Magdoff, Kittay tenants assemble a half-hour before its scheduled time. This charismatic nonagenarian, a pioneer in family life education and marital therapy, firmly believes that "one should keep growing and stimulating the brain, especially during the 'senior' years."

By offering topics that include "Love and Liking: What’s the Difference?," discussions are meaningful and relevant. She has the ability to inspire confidence and trust within the group participants who, in addition to discussing issues in the news that impact elders and topic-related ideas, open up about their families, their hopes, their fears and other personal issues.

Impeccably accessorized and wearing her signature hats, Dr. Singer-Magdoff walks around the discussion circle with microphone in-hand and responds to questions posed and encourages comments from other tenants. This a familiar arena for Dr. Singer-Magdoff who, throughout her career, was a frequent guest on radio programs and in the 1970’s, created and hosted an award winning talk show "Living Together," on WNEW-TV. During her days as an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Teachers College, she taught a then-student Ruth Westheimer, who later became a noted sex therapist expert.

At age 92, she still travels to Manhattan every Friday to her private practice and sees patients for half-a-day. The other half is spent with her daughter and granddaughter taking in NYC culture and cuisine.

"I am so blessed to find Kittay House. Kittay gives me the opportunity to continue doing something intensely creative and challenging."
