Sukkot
Sukkot at Kittay

With a slight autumn chill in the air, the week long festival of Sukkot or " Z'man Simchatenu," which means "the time of our rejoicing," was celebrated at Kittay House. Our talented engineering crew created a "sukkah" structure adorned with harvest produce, wall hangings and tree branches.

Observance of this holiday requires "living in booths for seven days." Kittay tenants did the next best thing, which was to use it as much as possible. They enjoyed conversations with friends, read, snacked and even held their weekly Jewish Study group within the sukkah. The weather cooperated most of the week, allowing the tenants to partake in the "mitzvah" of sitting in it, even while braving brisk winds and threatening clouds.

Event highlights included a violin concert performed by David Podles; 35 Westchester Day School students participated in song and brought smiles to the Kittay tenants; and a "Stories in the Sukkah" program.

Tenants and staff always find it a little hard to take down the beautiful sukkah after the holiday, but there are lovely memories from this year’s celebrations as it is carefully stored for use next Fall.
