Gloria Steinem Honors Women's Rights Pioneer and Kittay House Resident, Josephine Hulett

Women’s rights pioneer Gloria Steinem came to Kittay House to honor another pioneer during a standing room only event on September 1st.

"There is more heart in this room than I have felt in a long time," exclaimed Ms. Steinem, who came to honor her good friend, Josephine Hulett, one of the Kittay House’s residents. Their friendship blossomed as they met in the 1970's as two strong women’s rights advocates.

As a field officer for the National Committee on Household Employment, Josephine was instrumental in organizing over 40 affiliates and 1.5 million household workers. The result? The creation of the federal minimum wage coverage for domestic workers.

The event was powerful, passionate and moving. Excerpts from the book Making A Way Out of No Way: The Josephine Hulett Story were read by a variety of guests and friends, including its author Janet Dewart Bell. The biography chronicles Josephine’s life and struggles.

Musical performances included Eternal from the group P.M. Dawn, the Kittay Community Choir and Kittay staff member, Dee Williams. The force behind the tribute is another Kittay House tenant, Zelda Fassler, who extended her friendship to the then new tenant, Josephine. Little by little, Josephine began to share her astounding history. Amy Gruszewski, creative arts leader, spearheaded the event.

Kittay House Director Arlene Richman captured the memorable evening when she shared, "I have never felt prouder of t he community and their ability to find strength in each other than I do tonight."
