When is it time to look for a nursing home?

When is it time to look for a nursing home?

While nursing homes provide a multitude of important services, it is typically the option of last resort, selected when all other options have been exhausted, typically for safety reasons. At Jewish Home Lifecare we confer with families, exploring community-based care options such as day programs, homecare, technology, and supportive senior housing. Another option, geriatric care coordination, is often just what is needed when care needs overwhelm family caregivers, and can mitigate the need to relocate an elder to a nursing home.

When elders experience cognitive decline, it is always wise to have a complete work-up at either an in- or out-patient geriatric assessment facility, typically sponsored by a hospital and a clinic. The better a caregiver understands the scope of the decline and its likely trajectory, the greater the likelihood that they will choose a safe, even empowering, fit for the elder.
