When considering a change in living arrangements as an elder or on behalf of an elder, safety is a fundamental concern.
Ask the elder and those involved in his or her care whether there are safety concerns such as:
• frequent falls
• medication management
• wandering
• an inability to care for basic needs (bathing, dressing, preparing and eating meals)
Additionally, think about the following questions:
• What are the reasons for moving into a nursing home right now?
• Would the person want to or be able to live in an assisted living facility?
• What environment would the person thrive in?
• Does the person need any special services, for example, an Alzheimer’s Unit?
Some nursing homes offer the following special services: vent units, dementia units, traumatic brain injury units, sub-acute rehabilitation, and palliative care.
However, not all nursing homes offer all specialized units. If any of these special services are needed, be sure to learn whether they are offered at the homes you are considering.
