How is assisted living different from other elder housing?

Residents of assisted living facilities need only limited assistance. (The exception is in some dementia-specific facilities, where more extensive services are provided.)

Personal care, assistance with medication, and escorts may be included in the monthly rent or may be purchased for additional fees. 

Once there is a need for skilled nursing on an ongoing basis, the resident is most likely referred to a nursing home.

New York residents: In New York State, assisted living facilities are not required to offer 24-hour personal care or medical services.
