What questions should I ask while looking for housing?

Asking the following questions can help you find suitable housing within your budget.

How will the housing be paid for?
What is the total housing cost?
What is the best location?
What is the best type of living arrangement?
Does the facility have the right support services?
Does the facility have interesting activities? Are they affordable?
How is the quality and variety of food?
Is there transportation available?

How will the housing be paid for?
First, develop a budget by determining how much money and/or health insurance coverage is available to pay the monthly fees associated with senior housing. Then you can narrow down your search to those facilities in your price range.

What is the total housing cost?
To determine the full cost for housing, find out the monthly fee for the apartment or room rental and the monthly fee for all support services, whether they are a la carte or bundled.  Some housing, such as Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), may also involve an entrance fee.  Remeber to find out whether the living space is furnished, and which belongings may be brought.

What’s the best location?
The best location is usually one within your price range and close to family and friends who will visit.

What is the best type of living arrangement?
Living arrangements vary, from private apartments to shared rooms.  Some people prefer the company of a roommate, others do not.  If the living space is shared, find out how the facility handles roommate issues.

Does the facility have the right support services?
Think about what support services are currently needed and what services are likely to be needed in the future.  When considering different facilities, find out which services are offered at the facility. Also find out which services are included in the cost.  For those that are not included, find out what the extra cost is.

Does the facility have interesting activities? Are they affordable?
What does the person looking for housing like to do? Examples of questions to ask include: Is there an outdoor space such as a garden?  Is there a library? A cafe? Are there compatible religious services? Are there appealing social, educational, and/or cultural activities? How are residents informed of activities? Are activities free or is there an extra cost?

How is the quality of the food? Is it varied?
Find out how many meals are offered each day.  Ask for current and previous menus.  Visit during a meal and taste the food.  See if what is being offered matches what is on the menu for that day. Do they cater to special dietary needs?

Is there transportation available?
Is transportation available to them for local travel?  What is the cost?
