When someone needs to move directly to a nursing home from the hospital, a list of homes to choose from is provided. Sometimes there is pressure to take the first available nursing home opening.
You do not have to make a quick decision when it comes to a nursing home. You have the right to choose which home you will move in to. Sometimes this requires doing some research on your own in order to make an informed decision. If possible, tour different facilities to help you make an informed decision.
Ideally, nursing home research should be done before one is needed, to make the decision making process easier.
Friends and Relatives of the Institutionalized Aged (FRIA) offers a helpline to provide information and support on the process of moving to a nursing home directly from the hospital: (212) 732-4455.
