Is it a good idea to enroll in Medicare Part D in case there are medication needs in the future?

Even if you do not spend a lot of money on medications now, choosing to enroll in a Medicare Part D drug plan now may protect you from high drug costs in the future. Here’s why:

  • If you do not enroll when you are first eligible, you will pay a penalty fee if you enroll later. (Note: Those participating in Extra Help may not pay a penalty.)
  • Additionally, if you don’t sign up right away and you suddenly need drug coverage, you will need to wait until the next enrollment period which may leave you without coverage for a period of time. (Note: Enrollment usually begins in November of each year.)
