Enhancing Nutrition for Someone with Dementia

Follow these suggestions to help ensure a person with dementia or cognitive impairment is eating well:

  • Serve meals when the person is rested.
  • Serve meals at the same time and same place.
  • Permit hot foods to cool down.
  • Offer one food at a time.
  • Encourage self-feeding.
  • Avoid tough, crunchy foods that may cause choking (e.g. pretzels, popcorn, nuts, and seeds).
  • Serve foods that may be easy to hold – finger sandwiches.
  • Serve soups or high calorie drinks in mugs.
  • Enhance the calories and nutrients in the care recipient’s preferred foods.
  • Remind or cue person to eat slowly.
  • Minimize distractions in the dining area.
  • Discuss finger foods, and enhancing calories or nutrients with a Registered Dietitian.
