Follow these suggestions to help ensure a person with dementia or cognitive impairment is eating well:
- Serve meals when the person is rested.
- Serve meals at the same time and same place.
- Permit hot foods to cool down.
- Offer one food at a time.
- Encourage self-feeding.
- Avoid tough, crunchy foods that may cause choking (e.g. pretzels, popcorn, nuts, and seeds).
- Serve foods that may be easy to hold – finger sandwiches.
- Serve soups or high calorie drinks in mugs.
- Enhance the calories and nutrients in the care recipient’s preferred foods.
- Remind or cue person to eat slowly.
- Minimize distractions in the dining area.
- Discuss finger foods, and enhancing calories or nutrients with a Registered Dietitian.
