Geriatric Career Development Program wins NYCETC Award

Jewish Home Lifecare Named 2011 Opportunity Award Winner by the New York City Employment & Training Coalition

Jewish Home Lifecare’s Geriatric Career Development Program (GCD) is one of four workforce development programs and two individuals named winners of the 2011 Opportunity Awards competition, sponsored by the New York City Employment & Training Coalition (NYCETC).

Jewish Home Lifecare received the award in the category of Serving Youth, which recognizes an organization or program that has created a model for in- or out-of-school youth that integrates continuous learning with employment opportunities that have career potential.

The winning program, the Geriatric Career Development Program, has, since 2006, helped at-risk New York City high school students climb career ladders in health care.  The GCD is a groundbreaking experience-based youth work force development program providing disadvantaged New York City students with academic support, intergenerational mentoring, college preparation, job training and clinical skills to carry them into the healthcare field.  Students leave the program with extensive knowledge about the fields of health care and aging, the experience of working with elders, direct care skills and exposure to the wide range of careers within those fields.

Kathy Schrier, director of The Actors Fund Work Program and NYCETC board secretary, chaired the panel of judges. She noted, “The high caliber of the applicants, and the well-planned services they provide to multiple constituencies throughout the city, demonstrate that the workforce development community in New York City is doing outstanding work, particularly in the face of high unemployment.  We were impressed by every one of the programs we considered and we were inspired by those who were nominated for individual awards.”

The 2011 Opportunity Awards will be presented at an evening reception Wednesday, March 16 at the Broad Street Ballroom in Lower Manhattan.
