History
We celebrate the exodus of the Jews from Egypt and their liberation from slavery, as told in the Biblical Book of Exodus, chapters 12-14.
Customs
Passover is the most beloved of all Jewish holidays. Even people who don’t participate in other holidays often attend a Seder.
Seder
An elaborate meal that includes foods symbolic of the slavery and liberation experiences of the ancient Jews. We read the Haggadah, the booklet which tells the story of Passover.
Food
During the eight days of Passover we eat matzah (unleavened bread) and foods made from it, to remember that our ancestors left Egyptian slavery in a hurry. We avoid eating bread and other leavened foods during all eight days of Passover. Matzah also reminds us of the food the Israelites ate when they were slaves.
