The words Tisha b’av mean the ninth day of the Jewish month of Av.
It is a day of mourning for the ancient Temples that were destroyed in Jerusalem.
Background
According to tradition, both ancient Temples were destroyed on the same day of the Jewish calendar. The First Temple was destroyed in 586 BCE(BC) by the Babylonians; the Second Temple was destroyed in 70 CE(AD) by the Romans.
Customs
It is a sad day of mourning, on which some Jews fast. It is traditional to read from the Biblical book of Lamentations.
