Jewish Home Lifecare Gives Shabbat a Lift

Manhattan nursing home has a shabbat elevator for observant residents

Jewish Home Lifecare Gives Shabbat a Lift

Jewish Home Lifecare’s Manhattan campus recently installed a Shabbat elevator in order to accommodate the religious needs of its Shabbat-observant clients and their families.

For many observant Jews, pressing an elevator’s buttons violates traditional restrictions against the direct use of electricity during the weekly Sabbath.  The new elevator operates according to a preset program, stopping automatically on each floor for a fixed, predetermined amount of time.  This makes it possible for many observant clients and their families to travel up and down during Shabbat while keeping within the requirements of their Sabbath observance.

“It is another step Jewish Home is taking to make our Manhattan campus more welcoming and Shabbat-friendly for our observant clients and their families,” says Rabbi Jonathan Malamy, Director of Religious Life at Jewish Home Lifecare, Manhattan.

The Shabbat elevator runs from Friday before sundown until 10pm and then on Saturday from 7am until after Shabbat, making local stops from the ground up to the 7th floor and going back down  as an express.  It will also operate during the Jewish holidays.
