Here’s what a Homecare client has to say about Home Health Aide Dora Meighan, who has worked for her for the past year and a half.
“Ms. Dora Meighan is a number one Aide. She takes good care of me….
She keeps my home clean at all times, my meals are always on time and she fixes them so pretty. When she takes me out she sees that I am dressed right and look neat.
Ms Meighan is originally from Honduras. After losing her husband many years ago, she worked hard to support her family.– as a housekeeper, in a bakery, selling music on the streets. Finally, at age 54, she was able to come to New York to live with one her children, who had become a US citizen.
Dora had the standard training provided to all HAPI home health aides so that she would best be able to service her client. In 2003 after finishing her training and certification, Ms Meighan came to work for Jewish Home Lifecare. Her supervisor says that clients will go out of their way to call and praise Ms. Meighan and express how glad they are that she is working for them. Clients say things like:
“She knows what I need without my having to ask. She takes the extra effort to keep me comfortable and happy. She is simply wonderful.”
Ms. Meighan says that the most rewarding part of her job is, “getting to care for people who are all so different and getting to know them.”
When she first comes to the home of an elderly client she often finds they have retreated into a shell, becoming isolated from their children and much of what they have known and loved in their lives. Ms Meighan says she “… tries to get them out of that shell. Bring them back to their life.”
Recognizing how special Dora Meighan is, Jewish Home Lifecare is working to help her enroll in a Certified Nursing Assistant course at LaGuardia college, so the caring and dedication she brings to her work can help her grow in her career. She has already become a Peer Mentor in a Jewish Home Lifecare program that helps new Home Health Aides learn from the skills, experience and compassion of exceptional Home Health Aides like Dora.
Ms. Meighan is one of the sometimes invisible hands, faces and hearts that make our health care system work and that make such a difference in the lives of clients. She is someone that clients can count on to be there, to care for them and to bring comfort and joy to their lives.
