Student and Mentor

Jewish Home Lifecare’s Geriatric Career Development Program gives high school students a head start by providing training and first-hand experience in the health care industry, and offers the elders who participate in the program companionship as well as the opportunity to share their valuable life experience.

Program manager Helen Torres explains, “It does wonders for the seniors . . . they really look forward to seeing [the students].”

For the students, the opportunity to explore a career is only part of the program’s reward. Students play games with their mentors, work on activities together, and spend time talking, to learn about each other’s lives.

Rochelle Holder, 15, of Health Opportunities High School explains, “[Hearing] what they’ve lost and gained makes you appreciate everything more.”
