Jewish Home Lifecare has Dementia Special Care Unitsin our Bronx, Manhattan and Westchester skilled nursing care facilities. Dementia Special Care units in skilled nursing facilities are units that are specially equipped and have specially trained staff to create a safe, supportive and nurturing environment for elders suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other cognitive impairments.

Jewish Home Lifecare is an established leader in creating specialized Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia communities. There are dementia communities within our residential skilled nursing homes at our Bronx, Manhattan and Westchester campuses.

The foundation for Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia care at Jewish Home Lifecare is the Norma and Joseph Saul Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia Special Care Unit in the Bronx. The center has been nationally acclaimed for its unique approach to caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients.

Dementia special care communities are based on the concept that environment is perhaps the most significant factor affecting the daily lives of Alzheimer’s and dementia patients.

The dementia community provides space that is:

  • secure
  • comforting
  • non-threatening

It offers familiar frames of reference, reduces confusion and permits the freedom to move about in a safe, unrestricted space.

Within each community, staff create programs desgned to:

  • promote each resident’s abilities
  • minimize the stress that can aggravate confusion
  • maximize physical and cognitive capabilities

Communities offer group therapy sessions to promote wellness and decrease behavioral disturbances. Music, visual imagery, exercise and other techniques stimulate senses and foster a positive sense of empowerment for residents.

Arts and alternative therapies such as: yoga, tai-chi, aroma therapy, music, art and drama therapy are used extensively in a holistic approach to caring.

Staff, family members and caregivers are invited to take part in programs offered in the Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia Special Care communities.
