NORC stands for naturally occurring retirement community. NORC Support Service Programs provide health and social services to tenants located in apartment building complexes, or even a cluster of homes, where at least 50% of the residents are 60 years or older. These are communities that have aged in place.
The goal of NORC programs is to create and foster “good places to grow old.” Communities are usually rental or public housing developments for moderate to low income families, or cooperative apartments. There are about 42 programs in New York State. Thirty-three of these programs are in New York City (including Brooklyn, Manhattan, Bronx, and Queens).
Jewish Home Lifecare has partnerships with the following NORC communities:
- Penn South Chelsea area (Manhattan)
- Phipps Plaza Murray Hill area (Manhattan)
- Amalgamated/Park Reservoir (Bronx)
- Pelham Parkway (Bronx)
Jewish Home Lifecare serves as the health partner in these affiliations. We provide a registered nurse for the sites, on a part time basis. The nurse’s primary role is to provide health education and screenings. (Blood pressure screenings and diabetes support groups examples of services the nurse provides.) The nurses also arranges outside speaker visits to discuss a variety of health topics. In conjunction with the other NORC staff, nurses organize health fairs, and provide referrals for NORC residents.
Each NORC is different and has unique needs. The programs provide group teaching sessions on a weekly or monthly basis, and provide residents with access to other health services.
The goal is to promote a healthy lifestyle and support safe and successful community living. These programs truly make a difference in the lives of thousands of older adults.
