Volunteers from Urban Girl Squad, a NYC social group for women in their 20s and 30s, teamed up with their dogs for a Pet Therapy Day for nursing home residents at Jewish Home Lifecare (JHL) on Sunday, March 27th.
The group of enthusiastic volunteers, each accompanied by her own dog, visited elders for one-to-one petting time with the furry –pawed visitors. It was a rewarding day of give-back to the community by the volunteers while the elders enjoyed the unconditional love from man’s (and woman’s) best friends.
Spending time with four-legged friends provides many therapeutic benefits to the elders. A visit from a pet can diminish feelings of loneliness and depression. The visit provided welcome entertainment, as well as health benefits; stroking a dog can reduce a person’s blood pressure and encourages the use of hands, arms, stretching and turning.
Many nursing homes residents once owned pets and miss the unconditional affection and acceptance a pet gives them.
