Profile of a Short Stay Rehabilitation Client

At 92, Ruth Berman Harris is delighted to be walking again after a fall that left her with a fractured hip.

Following surgery and discharge from the hospital, Ms. Harris was in a wheelchair and dependent upon others for assistance. She credits her recovery to the rehabilitation that she received at Jewish Home Lifecare. After 38 days of physical and occupational therapy, Ms. Harris was able to walk, care for herself, and return to the home she shares with her daughter.

“Being able to walk again means the world to me. It is such an important part of my life and my independence” said Ms. Harris, a composer, professional harpist and harp instructor.

“I am very grateful to the therapy staff, as well as the doctors and nurses for all the wonderful care that they provided that has helped me walk again and enabled me to return home.”

Jewish Home Lifecare’s Short Stay Rehabilitation program provides up to three months of comprehensive in-patient rehabilitative therapy designed to help patients, aged 45 to 105, return home after a debilitating illness or health issue. The program includes individual physical, occupational and speech therapy geared to strengthening the patient so he/she can return to their community and resume an active independent life.

The range of patients seeking subacute care include people in need of rehabilitation following: a stroke or heart attack; hip fractures; burn injuries; complex surgical procedures such as colostomy, hip or knee replacements, amputations or multiple fractures; multiple trauma; heart operations or nervous system disorders.  It is also appropriate for those in need of complex wound care or who are undergoing cancer treatments.
