Small Monitor Gives a Big Voice to Elders in Pain

HealthBuddyThe telehealth unit, a small, interactive in-home monitor can be a means to enhancing care by giving a voice to elders in pain, according to a recent study by The Jewish Home Lifecare Research Institute on Aging in collaboration with Beth Israel’s Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care with support from the Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation.

Over the course of three months, some 10% of the patients using the telehealth unit reported pain related conditions that required intervention from the care team including changes in medication orders, ongoing education about medication use, and referral to physical therapy, psychiatry or social work, adult day referral or a joint visit from nurse and palliative care consultant.

This study highlights multiple benefits of TeleHealth Buddy:

  • Clients respond at a convenient time using a nonjudgmental mechanism allowing them to reveal information they may not necessarily reveal to a clinician
  • Telehealth findings supplement and complement nurse’s assessment.
  • Pain and other assessments are done several times a week, allowing the patient multiple opportunities to report pain even when the nurse is absent.
  • Telehealth raises the consciousness of the care team and provides another layer of protection for the client.
