Telehealth for Safety and Independence at Home

“I feel safe knowing that someone from Jewish Home is looking out for me every day”.
Ms. Rodriguez is an 83-year-old woman with congestive heart failure, hypertension and a depressive anxiety disorder, but she does not have a live-in nurse or caretaker who can monitor her health or ask her these questions each morning – and she doesn’t need one.

Every morning when Beatrice Rodriguez, a Jewish Home Lifecare Telehealth client, wakes up, she is asked several questions:

Did you take your medicine today?

Are you short of breath?

Do you have any pain?

Did you elevate your head while lying down?

Did you weigh yourself today?

Ms. Rodriguez is an 83-year-old woman with congestive heart failure, hypertension and a depressive anxiety disorder, but she does not have a live-in nurse or caretaker who can monitor her health or ask her these questions each morning – and she doesn’t need one.

She lives independently with an in-home health monitoring system called a Telehealth unit.

For information on how telehealth can help an elder stay safely and independently in their own home, contact Connections, the Jewish Home Lifecare information and referral service.

The Telehealth unit is a user friendly device that collects data on a daily basis from Jewish Home Lifecare clients in the privacy of their own home.

Through a simple question, answer and education session, clients are empowered with vital health and wellness information to better manage their disease and stay connected with their clinical support team.

The appliance connects to any existing phone line, much like an answering machine, without disrupting telephone service. Designed for individuals’ with limited dexterity and sight, the telehealth appliance has a large, easy-to-read screen and four large blue buttons to press for a response.

Clients answer personalized health questions to monitor signs and symptoms, promote medication compliance and provide valuable self-care information.

Ms. Rodriguez is a sociable senior who had a passion for dancing before severe leg swelling prevented that.  She responds to the Telehealth unit’s questions and her responses are sent to a team of authorized healthcare professionals at Jewish Home Lifecare.

She states, “I feel safe knowing that someone from Jewish Home is looking out for me every day”.
