A good walk, a good time, and a good deed all rolled into one.
These were the sentiments expressed by Sarah Neuman Center’s 50 participants in the annual “Walk for What Matters” on Saturday, June 7 in White Plains. These were the sentiments expressed by Sarah Neuman Center’s 50 participants in the annual “Walk for What Matters” on Saturday, June 7 in White Plains. The Walk’s purpose is to enable non-profit schools, mental health programs and nursing homes to raise funds for a variety of programs.

This year’s funds will go toward providing therapeutic activities for our residents. (In the past the money contributed provided residents with day trips to museums, malls and special events as well as in-house musicals, shows and travelogues.) Funds will also will be used to help pay for Sarah Neuman’s summer student internship program.

The annual 3.1 mile walk/run is conducted under the auspices of the United Way and several corporate sponsors, including Sarah Neuman.

This year Sarah Newman has raised  $55,415.41, bringing its total for the past 15 years to more than  $700,000.

Contributors include corporations, businesses, Friends of Sarah Neuman, staff members, volunteers, relatives of Sarah Neuman residents and community neighbors. These contributions have enabled Sarah Neuman to enhance the quality of life for its more than 300 residents.

The Walk started and finished at White Plains High School, winding its way through closed residential streets monitored by police. The walkers and runners were cheered on by their families, friends and neighbors who gathered at the finish line. Afterward all enjoyed breakfast donated by local merchants.

In the weeks leading up to the Walk, Sarah Neuman staff members helped publicize the event by signing up families, friends and neighbors to participate, conducting a prize drawing and holding a fund-raising  ice cream social.
