All study team members (this includes PI’s, research assistants, data analysts, etc.) are required to complete 3 trainings: CITI Human Research Protection Education, HIPAA in Research, and Data Security in Research.
Note: IRB Members have slightly different education requirements and will find the instructions under the IRB Members Only page. If you need the password please email the IRB Secretary.
It is essential that all investigators and their staff understand the regulations that govern experimentation with human subjects. Documentation of appropriate education is seen as the first building block in the protection of human research participants.
Below are the requirements that must be completed before any involvement in any human subject research project at JHL.
These trainings are offered through Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. If you have completed trainings similar to these at another institution (such as Columbia University, CUNY, etc.), you may submit those certificates to our IRB, but they are subject to approval.
It is mandated that all investigators and those identified as “key personnel” in human subject research have to provide evidence of having been educated in the protection of human subjects. For JHL and the IRB to be in full compliance with this mandate ALL investigators and key personnel, including all co-investigators, fellows, research coordinators, liaisons, consultants, foreign collaborators, etc., REGARDLESS of the research project sponsor, must satisfy this requirement.
To be in compliance with our Assurance with HHS, the IRB has no choice but to deny the privilege of participating as either an investigator or a key person on any research that is conducted on human subjects at JHL unless certification is obtained.
