How to Complete IRB Required Trainings

The IRB will not process submissions until these trainings have been completed. Please make sure all research staff complete these requirements. You must email your certificates to the IRB Secretary.

If you have previously completed CITI training for any other project or institution, please log in to CITI and add “Mount Sinai School of Medicine NYC” as an affiliate in order for any of your credits to transfer. You will be required to complete the course curriculum for your credits to transfer.

Length of Course:

The Basic Human Subjects course is expected to take 4-6 hours to complete. The average user breaks this down over 5 sessions. All modules must be passed and completed in order for you to fulfill the education requirement.

When Course is Completed:

Please retain the original of your certificate and email a copy to the IRB Secretary.

How Long the Course Will Remain Valid:

Beginning in January 2011, ongoing education in human subjects research will be required every 3 years. Refresher courses will be offered through the CITI program to meet this new requirement.

Steps to Complete Course:

New CITI Users

  1. Go to www.citiprogram.org
  2. Click on “New Users Register Here”
  3. Under “Select your institution or organization,” select “Mount Sinai School of Medicine NYC” in the “Participating Institutions” drop down box
  4. Create your own username and password
  5. Click on “Add a Course or Update your Learner Group”
  6. Under Question 1 select Investigators/Research Staff and Under Question 3, select Data Security and HIPAA Training. The Good Clinical Practice Course (Question 2) is NOT required and is NOT a substitute for the Human Subjects Research training
  7. If you have taken the Data Security and HIPAA training prior to January 2011, you can select HIPAA Update to watch the updated HIPAA and Data Security Training.
  8. For the 2 Required Elective Courses in the Human Subjects Research Education training, please complete “Defining Research with Human Subjects” and “Assessing Risk in Social and Behavioral Sciences.”

Returning CITI Users

  1. Log in to the CITI website.
  2. On the main page, click: Affiliate with Another Institution.
  3. Under Participating Institutions select Mount Sinai School of Medicine NYC.
  4. Follow steps 5 through 8 above.
